Student Life and Athletics
Student Life is a vital and integral part of the total educational environment at the College of Southern Maryland. Through planning and participating in extracurricular activities, a student can develop and expand skills in areas such as leadership, interpersonal communication, time management, goal setting, and decision making. Activities are also a way to meet new people, explore interests, and have fun. Every registered student is considered a member of the Student Government Association.
Intercollegiate Athletics
The college has intercollegiate athletics programs for both men and women. Men’s intercollegiate sports include basketball, baseball, golf, and soccer. Women’s intercollegiate sports include basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball. The college is a charter member of the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (JUCO), Region 20, and the National Junior College Athletic Association. All on-campus team activities take place on the La Plata Campus.
Student Government Association
The Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the official voice of the student body at the College of Southern Maryland. SGA exists to advocate on behalf of students in matters related to academic policies, institutional decision-making, access, and campus climate. The SGA, aided by the vice president of Student Excellence and Success, has principal responsibility for overseeing the Campus Association (CA) on all three campuses, as well as establishing policies and regulations for the allocation of student activities funds collected through the combined fee. Campus Associations
Campus Associations (CA) provide campus-specific representation and engagement for students at the La Plata, Leonardtown, and Prince Frederick campuses. Each CA serves as the voice of students at its respective campus and focuses on addressing localized student needs, concerns, and experiences. Each Campus Association is led by a student executive board consisting of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and campus representatives. The members of the campus association student executive board make up the Student Government Association officers.
Students wishing to run for office or to find out more about the CA should visit the CA office located on the campus nearest them or the Student Life and Athletics Department located in the CC Building on the La Plata Campus.
College Activities Board
The College Activities Board (CAB) is the college-wide student programming board that serves students across all campuses. CAB is responsible for planning and implementing large-scale, diverse programs and inclusive experiences that foster connection, school spirit, campus engagement and learning throughout the institution. CAB operates with a college-wide perspective and ensures that programming is accessible and relevant to students regardless of campus location. Student Clubs and Organizations
Student clubs and organizations at the College of Southern Maryland serve a communal function, offering students the opportunity to join together around governmental, cultural, political, and special-interests. Student clubs and organizations sponsor a wide variety of activities and programs throughout the year, while offering the opportunity to participate in various leaderships roles through club executive boards.
