Continuing Education and Workforce Development
The Continuing Education and Workforce Development at the College of Southern Maryland offers a wide variety of programs, courses, and services to meet the needs of our students, community, and local businesses.
CSM continuously updates workforce development offerings to meet the current and future needs of its students for workforce preparation, skills enhancement, and career advancement. Businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies are provided with state-of-the-art training customized to the individual management and production methods. CSM also provides extensive services to entrepreneurs and small businesses.
Children, teenagers, adults, and seniors can enrich their lives through CSM’s Community Education programs including Kids’ and Teen College, Wellness, Fitness and Aquatics classes, and Personal Enrichment courses. Class topics range from fitness and sports to the arts, history, technology and much more.
Courses are offered during the day, in the evening, and on the weekends for the convenience of students and local employers. Options include instructor-led courses, online training or self-paced labs. Most classes are listed on our web site at www.csmd.edu and in our Continuing Education Schedule of Classes, which is distributed three times a year in the fall, spring, and summer. Courses are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and students are encouraged to register early.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded when appropriate and documented on a continuing education record. The CEU record serves as documentation that a student has completed the course or continuing education certificate and has met the course competencies.

Youth
CSM meets several continuing education program needs for youth including:
Driver education features an orientation, classroom instruction, and behind-the-wheel training to prepare students to drive safely. CSM also offers defensive driver courses as well as driver improvement courses. More information can be found at www.csmd.edu/Go/Drive/.
Homeschool classes address special academic needs that are difficult to replicate in the home.
Kids’ and Teen College delivers Saturday Discoveries art, science, and technology classes and conferences during the school year and a flexible summer program offering more than 100 academic, personal enrichment, and sport classes at all our campus locations. Choose from a half- or full-day summer program for as many weeks as needed or all summer long. Extended day options are also available at the La Plata Campus through the St. Charles Learning Center. Wellness, Fitness, and Aquatics
CSM offers a variety of options to those looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Fitness Exercise Labs and Pool Memberships, and Personal Training sessions provide you with a comfortable “no-fuss” exercise alternative with no contracts or initiation fees.
The La Plata Campus offers group fitness courses, physical fitness assessments, and individualized exercise programs. The La Plata and Leonardtown Campuses offer a variety of aquatics courses in a 25-yard lap pool and fitness centers that haves circuit weight training equipment, free weights, exercise bikes, and treadmills.
The Leonardtown Campus also offers a 32,000-square-foot Wellness and Aquatics Center. The center has two swimming pools. The first pool is a six-lane lap pool and the second pool is a therapy pool. The center contains a variety of exercise spaces for aerobics and other fitness activities, as well as an outdoor meditation garden for Tai Chi and yoga. In addition, the facility has specialized fitness assessment rooms for individualized consultations and fitness analysis.
On the Prince Frederick Campus, CSM offers a fitness center with circuit weight training equipment, free weights, and a treadmill, as well as other fitness and wellness activities.

Center for Trades and Energy Training
The college’s Center for Trades and Energy Training (CTET) located in Waldorf boasts over 18,000 square feet of lab and classroom space. The Center is industry-accredited by both the National Center for Construction and Education Research (NCCER) and American Welding Society (AWS). CSM’s certified instructors offer hands-on experience in five new labs with state-of-the-art equipment. Our instructors all come from the field and maintain a journeyman or master’s license or AWS certification(s), if applicable. In preparation for emerging technologies, the college integrates renewable energy technologies into their curriculum. CTET delivers Maryland Apprenticeship Council approved related instruction for electrical and HVAC apprentices, a host of career starters and essential certifications, and many advanced-level skills training classes. CSM has strong partnerships with local trade associations, high schools, employers, and the building trades unions that can help when it comes to finding a job, articulation agreements have been signed with Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Public Schools enabling qualified seniors in related programs to move right into more advanced level of apprenticeship of craft training.
Center for Transportation
CSM also hosts a commercial driving range, Class A and B trucks and buses,. Professional instructors with real-world experience teach a curriculum certified by the Professional Truck Driving Institute for commercial driver license training. Small Business and Technology Development Center
The Maryland Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC), Southern Region services the tri-county business community and focuses on three core areas: no-fee confidential business consulting, educational programming, and timely, useful information. The SBTDC, Southern Region is hosted by the College of Southern Maryland and continues to have convenient locations in all three counties. The SBTDC utilizes a staff of experienced professionals to serve clients in both traditional business assistance as well as specialized consulting. Consulting is confidential, provided at no charge and emphasizes education and guidance in finding practical solutions to business problems. In addition, the SBTDC offers educational classes and workshops to aid entrepreneurs in articulating goals, evaluating and improving business ideas, researching and attracting needed advisors and resources, and writing business plans to build their businesses. Environmental, Health, and Safety Training and Assistance
Since 1982, the Maryland Center for Environmental Training (MCET) has established a reputation for excellence in environmental, safety and health training and compliance assistance through practical applications. MCET provides site-specific environmental, health and safety training and services for municipalities, private businesses and industry, and state and federal agencies. Employers and employees who partner with MCET integrate regulatory compliance into their site-specific training and day-to-day activities.
