BIO-2040L - Principles of Genetics Lab* (S) (1)

Co-requisite: BIO-2040

In this laboratory, students investigate classical Mendelian and modern molecular genetics using computer simulations. In addition, students perform other experiments. Use of computer software for data acquisition and statistical analysis is emphasized. Discussion of experimental results and analysis of the data collected are an integral part of the laboratory. This is a web-hybrid course.  This course satisfies the General Education Biological Science requirement.

List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections)
CO1 - Recognize the various stages of mitosis and calculate mitotic indices.

CO2 - Employ monohybrid, dihybrid, and trihybrid crosses using Punnett squares and statistical analyses.

CO3 - Calculate recombination frequencies to determine approximate map distances between closely linked genes.

CO4 - Perform Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and demonstrate its importance in biotechnology.

CO5 - Read and analyze a primary source article.

CO6 - Critique the degree of scientific validity in the reasoning applied to the collection and interpretation of data.

CO7 - Construct a valid hypothesis.

CO8 - Conclude whether a given set of data supports a particular hypothesis or theory.

Course Fee: $60
