CHE-1350 - General Chemistry for Engineers* (S) (3)

Prerequisite: MTH-1120 or MTH-1150 or appropriate math placement; CHE-1050 (score 20 or above on California Chemistry Diagnostic Test and waive CHE-1050)
This course covers the nature and composition of matter, solutions, chemical reactions, equilibria, kinetics, thermodynamics and electrochemistry with application to various fields of engineering. The course is designed specifically for students in the computer and electrical engineering programs. Credit will not be granted for CHE-1200 and CHE-1350 or CHE-1210 and CHE-1350. This course satisfies the General Education Physical Science requirement.

CO1 - Explain the concept of chemical change and classify the types of chemical reactions.

CO2 - Demonstrate an understanding of the particulate nature of matter by distinguishing between states of matter.

CO3 - Describe basic atomic structure, the historical development of the quantum mechanical model of the atom and its relationship to spectroscopy.

CO4 - Outline the development of the periodic table of the elements and use it to explain trends in the properties of the elements and their compounds.

CO5 - Describe how chemical compounds form and describe the nature of chemical bonding as a continuum.

CO6 - Demonstrate a basic understanding of the theories of covalent bonding and their relationship to molecular geometries.

CO7 - Set up and solve problems involving stoichiometry, chemical kinetics, equilibria, acids and bases, and electrochemical systems.

CO8 - Demonstrate the appropriate use of significant figures and exponential notation in scientific measurement.
