HMS-1021 - Alcohol and Drug Effects (3)


Students study the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and sedative, hypnotic, narcotic, stimulant, and hallucinogenic drugs on the individual. Students become familiar with drug classifications including drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, tolerance, and elimination as they apply to individual drug categories.

CO1 - Describe psychological, sociological, and physiological effects of mood-altering substances and behaviors.

CO2 - Discuss drug classifications and functions including methodology of absorption, distribution, metabolism, tolerance, and elimination as applied to individual drug categories.

CO3 - Define various models which explain the etiology of addiction, the services and treatment alternatives for the psychological, sociological effects of mood-altering substances and behaviors.

CO4 - Explain issues related to drug regulations and enforcement in the United States and the goal of intervention, education, and prevention strategies.
