MUS-1020 - Music Appreciation (A) (3)


This course introduces non-music majors to the elements of music, forms, and styles as they survey major composers and their works within the western music tradition. Important influences to this tradition are discussed including political, historic, social, religious, philosophical, artistic, and economic realities. Students are required to attend a variety of musical performances.  This course satisfies the General Education Arts requirement.

CO1 - Identify a variety of terminology of music fundamentals.

CO2 - Describe the evolution of western classical music style.

CO3 - Describe the various styles of vernacular music, including popular music, jazz, movie soundtracks, and world music.

CO4 - Examine the connections between a culture’s music and political, religious, social, aesthetic, historical, and economic factors.

CO5 - Identify the common elements of music (rhythm, harmony, texture, etc.).

CO6 - Utilize approaches to being an active listener.
