SPA-1010 - Elementary Spanish I (H, C) (3) Students practice speaking and writing Spanish, working with basic dialogues and writing short compositions in Spanish. This course introduces students to the culture of several Hispanic populations. No previous Spanish is required. Familiarity with English grammar and parts of speech is recommended for all beginning foreign language students. This course satisfies the General Education Humanities requirement and the Core Competency for Cultural and Global Awareness.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Develop communication skills by listening, reading, speaking, and writing in Spanish.
CO2 - Obtain a proficient level of writing, reading, listening and speaking in Spanish at the novice level according to the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages ACTFL proficiency guideline:
a. Writing: Students will create notes, lists and simple messages primarily by writing simple phrases on familiar topics.
b. Reading: Students will be able to derive meaning from short, non-complex texts that convey basic information in which the context is familiar.
c. Listening: Students will be able to recognize key words, cognates, and formulaic expressions that are contextualized, and to identify words and phrases from simple questions, statements, and high-frequency commands.
d. Speaking: Students will be able to communicate basic personal information, basic objects, a limited number of activities, preferences and immediate needs, and to respond to simple and direct questions.
