MED-1445 - Surgical Assisting* (1) Prerequisite: BIO-1040 ; BIO-1040L ; HEA-1100 ; MED-1410 Co-requisite: BIO-2800
Students learn to identify and care for surgical instruments and practice medical and surgical aseptic techniques in this course. Topics include sterilization and disinfection techniques and autoclaving; preparing patients for various minor surgical procedures; preparing the exam room; assisting with surgery; and post treatment patient care. Students also learn to apply dressings, bandages, splints and casts, as well as patient instruction and patient fittings for ambulatory aids. Students must earn a minimum grade of C for all prerequisite(s)/co-requisite(s) to meet registration requirements.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Discuss the relationship between the principles of asepsis and practice of sterile technique when establishing a sterile field.
CO2 - Demonstrate handwashing, packaging techniques and donning and doffing PPE.
CO3 - Identify basic surgical instruments by type, function, and name.
CO4 - Describe the stages/phases of wound healing and the complications that can occur during the healing process.
CO5 - Identify the various ways a wound or surgical incision is closed, the equipment used, and how the medical assistant aids in the procedure.Course Fee: $100
