SPA-1051 - The Cultures of Puerto Rico (3)

As a former Spanish colony and current U.S. territory with a diverse physical geography and richly manifested cultural heritage, Pert Rico is ideal for the study of Latin American, Caribbean, and Puerto Rican culture. Students in this course engage in an interdisciplinary approach as they study the multicultural diversity reflected in the urban and rural populations of the Puerto Rican mainland and the island of Vieques. Students study the ruins of indigenous populations, explore Spanish colonial architecture, and analyze the influences of indigenous, Spanish and Afro-Caribbean culture. Topics for reading and discussion include family relations, literature, religion, colonialism, economics, and politics, including the perennial question of independence vs. statehood and Puerto Rico-U.S. relations. This course is taught in English. No knowledge of Spanish language is required.
