The U. S. Department of Labor predicts that the trucking industry will need to hire, on average 400,000 professional drivers each year for the next decade. Employment opportunities will be available in both local and long distance segments of the transportation industry.
Today’s commercial vehicle operators must be well trained to meet the increased demands of the modern, competitive transportation industry. This program trains individuals in the fundamentals of driving a Class A commercial vehicle, with emphasis on the practical knowledge required for tractor-trailer driving, and the operating and related skills needed to be successful in the transportation industry.
Through lectures, labs, and hands-on exercises, participants learn to safely manage the operation of a commercial vehicle in various driving situations. Both written and verbal communication skills are reinforced through vehicle inspection reporting, accident reporting, and completion of hazardous materials handling documentation. Trip planning and log book exercises that comply with the Department of Transportation regulations for hours of service will emphasize mathematical skills.
Students will be prepared to take the Motor Vehicle Administration Class A Commercial Vehicle License skills exam and can earn the following endorsements: general knowledge, air brakes, combination, doubles/triples, tankers and hazardous materials. The course includes defensive driving training and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations required entry-level driver training certificate. This program is a statewide designated program. For more information see the coordinator.
