This associate of arts transfer option provides students with proficiency in the Spanish language and familiarity with the cultures and literature of Spanish-speaking communities throughout the world. The degree is appropriate for students intending to major in Spanish at a four-year institution or for students for whom a knowledge of Spanish language and culture will enhance their academic program or career.

For the Spanish AA degree at CSMD, the language program is proficiency-oriented and its objectives in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are set from the novice-mid to advanced level of the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages scale. Standards are based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning languages to establish a link between communication and culture by making connections and comparisons, and using these skills to be part of local and global communities.

The maximum number of credits accepted in transfer from other institutions to this program is 45.

Spanish teacher, translator, social service or law enforcement agent.

Students will…

  1. Engage in interactions in Spanish in a variety of contexts by developing social and cultural competence, establishing relations with others, providing and obtaining information and expressing feelings, emotions and opinions. 
  2. Understand and interpret written and spoken Spanish on a variety of topics. 
  3. Present information in Spanish to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
  4. Develop awareness of the social and cultural influences of the Spanish language and their own.
  5. Create strategies and connections that will allow students to continue acquire their Spanish skills outside the classroom.
