Medical Laboratory Technology, AAS

This five (5) semester program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 5600 N. River Rd. Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018-5119.

It is designed to prepare students to work as a member of a diagnostic healthcare team. The medical laboratory technician performs routine procedures under the supervision of a medical technologist or pathologist. Tests performed by the medical laboratory technician include complete blood counts, urinalysis, cross-matching blood for transfusion, identifying pathogenic organisms, and chemical analysis of blood and other body fluids. The program includes rotations in a clinical laboratory. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification Exam. 

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology program:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2.00 GPA in high school (with minimum grade of “C” in 1 year of chemistry, biology, and algebra)

OR

Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA with at least 12 earned college credits

  • College placement test scores at ENG 1010, MTH 1115 or MTH 1120, CHE 1050, and placement out of Reading, or completion of the appropriate College Prep courses to achieve these levels
  • ACT (American College Test) composite score of 16 or above, SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) equivalent score of 790 or above for Critical Reading and Math, or a degree from an accredited college or university. ACT and SAT scores are considered current for five years. 
  • Provide evidence of registration for Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science theory and laboratory courses (MLT 1012 & MLT 1012L)
  • Provide evidence of registration for the prerequisites to Hematology (MLT 1042 & 1042L)
    • Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science theory and laboratory courses (MLT 1012 & MLT 1012L)
    • Principles of Biology I theory and laboratory courses (BIO 1060 & BIO 1060L)

This is a competitive admission program. First consideration will be given to residents of CSM’s service area (Calvert, Charles, St Mary’s counties). All petitioners who have met the admission criteria are ranked and admitted according to their residency status, cumulative GPA, and ACT/SAT. The cumulative GPA will be calculated for all colleges in which transfer work has been applied to the program.

No students may register for MLT courses, other than Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science (MLT 1012/L), until they have been admitted to the Medical Laboratory Technology program.

MLT students must achieve a “C” or better in all MLT and required general education courses. The MLT courses are designed to be completed within four consecutive college semesters and a summer session.

All incoming MLT students must meet the Essential Functions necessary for the profession. These can be located on the CSM MLT Program’s website at: http://www.csmd.edu/programs-courses/credit/academic-divisions/hea/medical-laboratory-technology/.

The Medical Laboratory Technology program at CSM may be designated as a Health Manpower Shortage program. For more information, contact the Admissions Department.

Applicants may obtain additional information from the Health Sciences Division MLT Program Coordinator.

The maximum number of credits accepted in transfer from other institutions to this program is 48.

NOTE: Students are required to provide proof of immunization status, a completed health form, a criminal background check and drug screen at the students’ expense. Students are also required to provide proof of health insurance and CPR certification. The American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers and the American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuers are the only accepted CPR courses.

The college will not be responsible for any tuition, fees or other costs that may be charged or paid or lost due to incomplete, untimely or unsatisfactory health records, CPR certification, background check or drug screen.  The college is not responsible for the conduct of background checks and drug screenings, or decisions made by other entities as a result of the background check and drug screening requirements.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will

  1. Accurately perform manual and automated procedures in Hematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Serology, Clinical Microbiology, Urinalysis, Body Fluids, and Blood Banking.
  2. Demonstrate competency in safely collecting, processing, and analyzing specimens and results.
  3. Analyze specimens and procedures for Quality Assessment factors that affect patient results and perform actions to make corrections.
  4. Accurately comply and interpret quality control measures in all major areas of the lab.
  5. Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct including confidentiality and interpersonal communication skills.
  6. Correctly perform daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance on equipment and instruments.
  7. Effectively plan for continuing education and lifelong learning as a requirement for maintaining professional certification.

The following is a recommended sequence of courses for completing this program. College Prep and prerequisite course requirements, credit load, and/or course availability may affect a student’s individual progress. Course availability within the program sequences is specifically intended for full-time students who begin their course work with the fall semester. Students should always consult their online program evaluation or an academic advisor to better understand typical course availability and individual program planning.

Completion of this course meets the Social/behavioral and Cultural and Global Awareness requirements.
