Teacher Education: Secondary, AA

This curriculum prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university within the state of Maryland to pursue a bachelor’s degree and Maryland teacher certification in Secondary Education Grades 7-12.

Students should familiarize themselves with the program requirements of the institution to which they plan to transfer.  Students should complete all elective credits in the content area in which they intend to certify.

Secondary Education: Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, English, Modern Foreign Language, Social Studies, Mathematics, Physical Science, or Physics.

PK-12 areas: Art, Dance, Environmental Education, Health, Music, Physical Education.  

Students must complete at least 45 hours of supervised field experience in a public school setting as part of the degree.  Students must achieve a 2.75 or higher grade point average at graduation and receive a grade of “C” or better in all courses.  Students must also submit passing scores on an MSDE-approved basic skills test (Praxis Core, SAT, ACT, or GRE).  

The maximum number of credits accepted in transfer from other institutions to this program is 45.

Note: Maryland has approved middle school certification. Students who are interested in teaching in this grade level should follow the AAT Elementary: Generic Special Education Grades 1-6 program.

Students will…

  1. Identify and describe the historical, philosophical, sociological, and governance foundations of American public education and explain the structure and organization of schools, the roles of classroom teachers, and contemporary educational policy and issues that influence teaching and learning;
  2. Explain and compare the major theories, concepts and principles of human growth and development;
  3. Utilize theories of learning and teaching to plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons that address the needs of diverse learners as well as to analyze learning environments; and
  4. Demonstrate professional responsibility and dispositions in the ability to reflect on practice, engage in continuous professional growth, and collaborate productively with others to create positive and effective learning experiences and environments

The following is a recommended sequence of courses for completing this program. College Prep and prerequisite course requirements, credit load, and/or course availability may affect a student’s individual progress. Course availability within the program sequences is specifically intended for full-time students who begin their course work with the fall semester. Students should always consult their online program evaluation or an academic advisor to better understand typical course availability and individual program planning.
