MED-1445 - Surgical Assisting* (1)

Prerequisite: BIO-1040 ; BIO-1040L ; HEA-1100 ; MED-1410    
Co-requisite: BIO-2800  

Students learn to identify and care for surgical instruments and practice medical and surgical aseptic techniques in this course. Topics include sterilization and disinfection techniques and autoclaving; preparing patients for various minor surgical procedures; preparing the exam room; assisting with surgery; and post treatment patient care. Students also learn to apply dressings, bandages, splints and casts, as well as patient instruction and patient fittings for ambulatory aids.

CO1 - Identify members of the surgical team and their roles

CO2 - Discuss and demonstrate understanding of the surgical patients needs.

CO3 - Identify hazards to the patient and staff in the operating environment.

CO4 - Discuss the relationship between the principles of asepsis and practice of sterile technique.

CO5 - Demonstrate handwashing, packaging techniques and donning and doffing PPE.

CO6 - Identify basic instruments by type, function, and name.

CO7 - Understand complications of wound healing.

CO8 - Describe the stages/phases of wound healing.

CO9 - Identify suturing materials and stapling devices and their usage.
