MTH-1125 - Applied Calculus* (M) (3) Prerequisite: MTH-1120 , MTH-1150 , or appropriate score on mathematics placement exam MTH-1560 is now MTH-1125. An introduction to differential and integral calculus with a focus on applications in business and life sciences. Topics include algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; limits; derivatives; integrals; mathematical modeling; and functions of one and several variables. This course satisfies the General Education Mathematics requirement.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Calculate derivatives in standard notation using the definition of limits and the power, product, quotient, and logarithm rules.
CO2 - Use calculus-based methods to solve real-world problems including optimization and average and marginal cost, revenue, and profit.
CO3 - Apply the rules of exponents and logarithms to simplify expressions and solve equations.
CO4 - Perform anti-differentiation of simple algebraic and exponential functions, and utilize definite integration to find the area under and between curves.
CO5 - Utilize differentiation to collect data including rates of change, intervals of increasing/decreasing and concavity, absolute and relative extrema, and inflection points.
CO6 - Calculate first and second order partial derivatives.
CO7 - Utilize partial derivatives to test for relative extrema, form Lagrange multipliers to find the maxima and minima of a constrained function, and calculate the “best fit” of a data set.
