This program provides sufficient knowledge to prepare students for entry-level network security positions and also serves those already working in the field who wish to update their skills. On completion of the program, students will be prepared for entry-level positions in cybersecurity or transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree in Information Assurance, Network Security, Cybersecurity, or related field.

The influx of security into every aspect of information technology has created the need for a workforce skilled in implementing and managing the security infrastructure of organizations. This degree is designed around industry-accepted certifications and current industry standard techniques that prepare the students to meet these workforce needs. Graduates will have knowledge of networks and operating systems concepts, a solid foundation in networking, and will be prepared to take the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification exam. With further study, graduates will also be prepared to take other certification exams including CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Linux+, and EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH). This program has been designated as a CAE-CDE 2Y - National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense 2-Year Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

Security is among the fastest-growing professional career areas worldwide and career opportunities exist in government, business, and industry. Security positions are available in network, internet, database, application and wireless security with job titles including security technician, security analyst, security associate, security administrator, security specialist, security consultant, and security engineer.

Students may also enter into cybersecurity careers through the Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or Electrical Engineering programs. Students should meet with an advisor to explore these other academic programs.

The maximum number of credits accepted in transfer from other institutions into this program is 45.

 Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will

  1. Students analyze social, professional, security, and ethical issues related to computing
  2. Students apply industry standard information security practices to solve a variety of business and technical problems
  3. Students demonstrate understanding of key security domain concepts (policy development, physical security, computer application security, network defense, user support, and disaster and recovery planning)
  4. Students secure information as it exists in networks and computer systems by applying a layered security policy
  5. Students explain as well as justify, in both oral and written form, security procedures and recommendations for a non-technical audience

The following is a recommended sequence of courses for completing this program. College Prep and prerequisite course requirements, credit load, and/or course availability may affect a student’s individual progress. Course availability within the program sequences is specifically intended for full-time students who begin their course work with the fall semester.
