MED-1430 - Phlebotomy and Diagnostic Lab Tests* (3)

Prerequisite: HEA-1100 ; MED-1410  ; BIO-1040 ; BIO-1040L   
Co-requisite: BIO-1650 ; BIO-2800   

Students learn to safely and aseptically perform phlebotomy and capillary puncture, collect and process blood and other specimens for testing or transport. Topics include point of care testing: CLIA-waived hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology, and microbiology testing; quality control and assurance; laboratory safety and recordkeeping. Laboratory and practicum experiences are included in the course.

CO1 - Demonstrate proper communication surrounding diagnostic lab tests to both patient and provider.

CO2 - Demonstrate proper documentation when obtaining lab samples.

CO3 - Demonstrate proper specimen collection.

CO4 - Understand the MA’s role in a POL.

CO5 - Understand point of care and CLIA waved tests.

CO6 - Explain Quality control and assurance.

CO7 - Explain proper laboratory safety.
