EDU-1012 - Introduction to Early Childhood Education* (3)


Co-requisite: College-level reading placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A  or IRW-0900B 

Students are introduced to the field of early childhood education, learning theories, classroom management, program and environmental planning, and curriculum development. The course will concentrate on the needs of the infant through the eight-year-old child. This course, combined with EDU-1013, meets the Maryland requirement for preschool teachers in licensed child care facilities. Students enrolled in this course will be assessed based on their use of college-level reading, writing, and communication skills. 

List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections)
CO1 - Apply the concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas to create meaningful, challenging learning experiences and environment for all children.

CO2 - Identify methods to create positive partnerships with families and communities and supportive interactions in their work with young children.

CO3 - Assess young children using their understanding that child observation, documentation and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of the early childhood profession.

CO4 - Apply developmentally effective approaches to connect with children and families.

CO5 - Design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curricula to promote positive outcomes for all young children.

CO6 - Apply early childhood professional requirements using ethical guidelines and professional standards such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children Code of Ethical Conduct.
