EDU-1160 - School Age Child Care: Curriculum and Teaching* (3) Co-requisite: College-level reading placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A or IRW-0900B
Students are introduced to the discipline of school age child care curriculum (before and after care). Emphasis is placed on growth and development of children from five to 12 years of age. Students will plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and lessons, examine classroom management, environmental planning challenges, utilization of community resources, and communication techniques. This course, combined with EDU-1013, meets the Maryland requirements for school-age teachers in child care facilities. Students enrolled in this course will be assessed based on their use of college-level reading, writing, and communication skills.

CO2 - Describe the physical, cognitive, psychosocial and moral development of school-age children to identify how each of these areas influences children’s development and learning.
CO3 - Develop developmentally appropriate lesson plans with objectives that are connected to content and assessment strategies.
CO4 - Analyze various child development theories and the relationships of these theories to instruction in the classroom for children ages five to twelve.
CO5 - Compare strategies for managing children’s behavior in the classroom, while addressing the relationship between children’s behavior, classroom environment, and home environment.
CO6 - Demonstrate the value of play and the educational rationale behind games and activities in various curriculum areas.
