HST-1019 - Medieval Civilization* (H, C) (3)

Prerequisite: College-level reading placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A  or IRW-0900B  
Students explore the history of Europe and the near East (500 C.E. to 1400 C.E.), from the breakup of the Roman Empire to the dawn of the Renaissance.  Students survey economic, social, and cultural developments through study of topics such as feudalism, the Crusades, trade, and the interactions among the three major Western religions  - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  This course satisfies the General Education Humanities requirement and the Core Competency for Cultural and Global Awareness.

List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections)
CO1 -  Identify the factors leading to the breakup of the Roman Empire and the emergence of medieval Europe.

CO2 -  Explain the development and devolution of the feudalism.

CO3 -  Analyze the rise of Islam and the impact of Islamic conquest, expansion, and culture.

CO4 -  Describe the ways in which the three monotheistic faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, interacted during the Middle Ages.

CO5 -  Describe daily life in the Middle Ages, including the role of women and members of religious minorities.

CO6 -  Analyze the social, political, and economic impact of famine and plague on Europeans during the Middle Ages.

CO7 -  Identify the ways in which the end of the Middle Ages saw the emergence of the Renaissance.
