LAN-1100 - Introduction to Women’s Studies* (H, C) (3)

Prerequisite: College-level reading and writing placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A  or IRW-0900B 
In this course, students investigate the experiences of women in the United States. The focus is on how women function in their various business, social, and personal roles, and how they contribute to and are influenced by their cultural context. The course covers a variety of topics such as women’s health, women’s history, and social policies and laws as they relate to women. In addition, students explore cultural constructions that affect women such as gender, work, and family. Works by women provide a significant means of investigation in the study.  This course satisfies the General Education Humanities requirement and the Core Competency for Cultural and Global Awareness.

CO1- define Women’s Studies from a number of perspectives,

CO2- define feminism from a number of perspectives,

CO3- understand and identify the ways that gender is developed and performed,

CO4- identify ways gender intersects with ability, race, class, religion, sexual orientation, age, and ethnicity

CO5- understand how women may have differences experiences globally both, historically and currently,

CO6- recognize the contributions of women in a variety of areas.

CO7- understand the major versions of feminism and recognize the issues that characterized each,

CO8- describe a basic understanding of Feminist Theory,

CO9- clearly identify the interdisciplinary nature of Women’s Studies
