MTH-2100 - Concepts of Mathematics for Teachers* (4)

Prerequisite: MTH-0994  or MTH 0970   and completion of 24 credits
Elementary education students investigate concepts commonly found in elementary/middle school mathematics curriculum. Topics include numbers (natural, integers, and rational), mathematical systems, numeration, algorithms, and number theory. Emphasis is placed upon the understanding of core concepts and learning new and innovative ways of learning and teaching math.  Each student is required to observe an elementary or middle school mathematics lesson.  Students are advised not to take this course as their first mathematics course.

List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections)
CO1 - Perform whole number, fraction, and decimal operations, as well as solve percent problems without the use of a calculator and explain the importance of doing so.

CO2 - Use multiple problem-solving techniques in order to solve mathematical problems.

CO3 - Model the number systems: natural numbers; whole numbers; integers; rationals, and solve basic operations using number lines, Venn Diagrams, and manipulatives.

CO4 - Use mathematical language, logical thinking, problem-solving ability, and notation appropriately to communicate ideas.

CO5 - Create activities or lessons using topics taught in class to explain mathematical concepts to early childhood through 8th-grade students.
