WFS-1770 - Introduction to the Sociology of Sport* (3) Co-requisite:
This course enhances a student’s ability to analyze and address issues of sport as they impact society. Focusing on major issues such as gender, race, adolescence, the media, gambling, competition, and performance enhancing drugs, students explore how sports have influenced, and have been influenced by, society and culture.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Discuss current and historical situations to form the connections between sport and society.
CO2 - Relate the impact of sports and media on the images and psyche of individuals and groups.
CO3 - Articulate and evaluate the effect of competitive pressures, stigma, and stereotypes on topics such as self-actualization, authority, gender roles, violence, education, and drug use.
CO4 - Relate the role of sports on business and politics and discuss the pros and cons of team identity on a community.
