MTH-2120 - Statistics with Applications* (M) (4) Prerequisite: MTH-0994 or MTH-0970 In this course, students will be introduced to descriptive and inferential statistics. Students will learn about presentation of data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, the binomial and normal probability distributions, sampling techniques, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing (z-test, t-test, chi-squared). These topics will be addressed in light of their use in education, specifically for elementary and middle school teachers. Graphing calculators and computer software are used extensively throughout this course. Students will be required to do several group projects as part of the course.

a. How to compute and interpret the 5-number summary
b. How to construct data tables and histograms
c. How to find the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation of ungrouped data
d. How to find the mean and standard deviation of grouped data

CO2 - Probability:
a. How to compute probabilities for single, compound and complementary events
b. How to set up probability distributions and find the mean and standard deviation of the distribution
c. When to use the binomial distribution and how to calculate binomial probabilities
CO3 - Normal Distribution:
a. How to compute z-scores and how to use the normal distribution table
b. The implications of the Central Limit Theorem
c. How to compute confidence intervals for means and proportions
d. When and how to use the z and t statistics in a confidence interval
e. How to determine sample size for means and proportions
CO4 - Hypothesis Testing:
a. How to test the three types of claims about means and proportions of large and small samples
b. How to set up the null and alternative hypothesis
c. When to use one or two tailed tests
d. How to find and interpret p-values
CO5 - Regression and Goodness of Fit:
a. How to find the equation of the least squares regression line from raw data
b. How to find the correlation coefficient and test for significance
c. How to find and interpret the coefficient of determination
d. How to set up contingency tables and test for goodness of fit
