EMS-2514 - EMS Cardiac Management* (3)

Prerequisite: EMS-1544

This course focuses on the cognitive knowledge associated with EMS cardiac management. The following topics are included, but not limited to: assessment and management of medical emergencies, cardiac assessment, cardiac management, 3 and 12 lead EKGs, cardiac diseases and pathophysiology. Knowledge of skills includes, but is not limited to: CPAP/BiPAP, recording and interpreting EKGs, defibrillation, pacing, and administration of medications associated with cardiac emergencies.

List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections)
CO1 - Integrate assessment findings with principles of epidemiology and pathophysiology to formulate a field impression and implement a comprehensive treatment/disposition plan for a patient with a medical complaint.

CO2 - Assess, treat and manage cardiac emergencies including: Myocardial Infarction, Acute Coronary Syndromes, Heart Failure, Cardiac tamponade,Cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, cardiogenic shock, vascular disorders, Aortic Aneurysm/Dissection, thromboembolism, Congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease, coronary heart disease, infectious diseases, and cardiomyopathy. Respiratory disorders as related to cardiac emergencies and Cardiac Arrest and termination of resuscitation.

CO3 - Integrate assessment findings with principles of pathophysiology and knowledge of psychosocial needs to formulate a field impression and implement comprehensive treatment/disposition plan for patients requiring: Pharmacological interventions, Electrical interventions to include:Defibrillation/Pacing/Cardio version, Multi-lead monitoring and interpretation, CPAP/BiPAP, Management of arrhythmias, Pericardiocentesis.
