MUS-1025 - Music in World Cultures (A,C) (3) Students will survey the elements of music in the context of musical cultures from around the world. This course will highlight the similarities and differences between various world cultures in the field of music. Students will study a variety of musical styles and genres from a variety of musical traditions, including social, economic, religious, and political, emphasizing what the music means to those who practice it. This course satisfies the General Education Arts requirement and Core Competency for Cultural and Global Awareness.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Identify a variety of world musics in the context of culture.
CO2 - Examine the connections between a culture’s music and political, religious, social, aesthetic, and economic factors.
CO3 - Identify the common elements of music (rhythm, harmony, texture, etc.) as parts of a culture’s artistic traditions.
CO4 - Define the music vocabulary of a variety of world cultures.
CO5 - Demonstrate the characteristics of an “active listener” through classroom demonstrations and live and/or taped performances.
CO6 - Demonstrate an understanding of ethnomusicology as a pathway to understanding other cultures.
