Medical Coding Specialist Certificate

This certificate program provides the knowledge and skills needed to classify medical data from patient records for submission to insurance companies or the government for reimbursement of expenses and to researchers and public health officials to monitor trends in healthcare. Students develop skill in accurate interpretation of patient diagnosis and treatment descriptions; the ICD, CPT and HCPCS Level II coding systems; billing and reimbursement; and health information documentation. Graduates may be employed by hospitals, physicians’ offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, or specialty centers. Graduates are eligible to take the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) examination sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association.
This may be a competitive admission program determined by student/instructor ratios and clinical space available. A grade of “C” or better is required in all program courses.
This program may be designated as a Health Manpower Shortage program. For more information contact the Admissions Department.
The maximum number of credits accepted in transfer from other institutions to this program is 27.
