MLT-1012 - Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science* (1) Prerequisite: MTH-0994 or MTH-0970 or higher; and college-level reading and writing placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A or IRW-0900B

Admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology program is not required to take this course. Students are introduced to the analytical and procedural skills utilized in the medical laboratory. Topics covered include laboratory equipment, quality and safety regulations, medical ethics, mathematics, testing methodologies, measurements and blood collection techniques. A passing grade of “C” is required in this course.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Describe safe and ethical medical laboratory practices and their effects on Quality Assessment included in phlebotomy, specimen processing, and result reporting.
CO2 - Explain the purpose, principle, and common applications of basic clinical laboratory equipment and testing methodologies.
CO3 - Evaluate Quality Control and reagent preparation using basic laboratory calculations.
CO4 - Discuss the role of regulatory agencies including; contributions to Clinical Laboratory Medicine, continuous professional development, and professional ethics.
