MED-1410 - Medical Assisting: Basic Operations* (3) Prerequisite: College-level reading and writing placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A or IRW-0900B ; and MTH-0910 or MTH-0992 or higher Co-requisite: BIO-1040 BIO-1040L HEA-1100
This course introduces students to the profession of Medical Assisting and prepares them to perform basic clinical procedures such as aseptic hand washing, taking a health history and chief complaint, measuring vital signs, and assisting with routine physical and specialty examinations. Maintenance of examination and treatment areas, proper disposal of wastes, handling patient telephone calls and patient instruction are also addressed.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Demonstrate proficiency with oral and written communication with patients and staff.
CO2 - Demonstrate medical asepsis and infection control techniques.
CO3 - Correctly assess and document a patient’s medical history and physical and mental health status based on subjective and objective information to assure accuracy in diagnosis and treatment.
CO4 - Obtain anthropometric measurements and vital signs.
CO5 - Maintain examination and treatment areas.
CO6 - Identify the differences between medical office emergencies and assist with examinations.
