HIM-1140 - Diagnostic & Proc Coding I* (4) Prerequisite: College-level reading placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A or IRW-0900B ; BIO-1040 and BIO-1040L ; HIM-1130 Co-requisite: BIO-2800 and PHM-1440
Students will learn the guidelines and rules for the ICD diagnostic coding classification system for outpatient and inpatient settings. Students will have the opportunity to apply diagnosis codes through practice with coding exercises, cases studies, and online activities. Ethical coding standard for diagnosis coding will be applied in this course. Students will learn about reimbursement methodologies and current regulations, grouping, and Present on Admission indicators (POA).
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Apply the principles of ICD to any given diagnosis or procedure in an inpatient and ambulatory care environment.
CO2 - Identify DRG’s and MS-DRG and APC’s for validation and assignment.
CO3 - Describe the physician query process and how it affects coding and reimbursement.
