MED-1400 - Introduction to Medical Coding* (1) Prerequisite: MED-1410 ; MED-1442 Co-requisite: MED-1415
This course does not fulfill the requirements for the Medical Coding Specialist Certificate Program and does not prepare students for a career in medical coding. Students are introduced to diagnostic procedural coding using the International Classification of Disease, current edition, and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding systems required for medical insurance claims and statistical information in health care facilities. This course provides an overview of these coding systems.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Identify diagnosis and procedure codes
CO2 - Compare codes used in different locations (i.e. Ambulatory, Hospital, Physician office)
CO3 - Explain why coding is important to the reimbursement process
CO4 - Explain what the various coding systems are and how they are utilized
CO5 - Demonstrate a Medical Assistants role in the revenue cycle and how they can assist
