PHM-1015 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technician Practice* (3) Prerequisite: MTH-0910 or MTH-0992 or higher; and college-level reading placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A or IRW-0900B Co-requisite: PHM-1015L ; HEA-1105 ; BIO-1040 ; BIO-1040L
Students will explore the role of the pharmacy technician in healthcare delivery while gaining an understanding of the current direct care delivery and medication distribution systems. The course will also discuss the impact of history on the evolution of the profession and how the role of the pharmacy technician has evolved. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of pharmacy laws and regulations, drug characteristics, preparations, dispensing, and inventory and information management systems used in the practice of pharmacy.
List Course Outcomes (consistent for all sections) CO1 - Demonstrate ethical conduct and adherence to pharmaceutical laws, regulations and professional standards while providing pharmacy services.
CO2 - Compare and contrast the pharmacist and pharmacy technician’s role in collecting, organizing, recording and evaluating demographic and clinical information for direct patient care, medication use review, and departmental management as a member of today’s healthcare team.
CO3 - Explain the steps involved with receiving, screening, and processing prescriptions/medication orders for completeness, accuracy, and authenticity.
CO4 - Describe the procedures involved with inventory management and pharmaceutical purchasing.
CO5 - Demonstrate an understanding of healthcare occupations, medication distribution systems, and information management systems used in the practice of pharmacy.
CO6 - Explain different health insurance programs and how billing and reimbursement standards function within pharmaceutical practice.
