PHM-1015L - Introduction to Pharmacy Technician Lab* (2)

Prerequisite:

MTH-0910  or MTH-0992  or higher and college-level reading placement or complete one of the following: IRW-0900A  or IRW-0900B  
Co-requisite: PHM-1015 ; HEA-1105 ; BIO-1040 ; BIO-1040L  

Students will apply laws, regulations, and professional standards governing pharmacy operations to prepare and dispense medication orders while learning to work professionally and ethically as a member of the healthcare team.  Students will learn to utilize reference material, medication distribution system, and information management systems to assist the pharmacist in collecting, organizing, recording and evaluating demographic and clinical information for direct patient care.  Additionally, students will be exposed to the techniques associated with non-sterile compounding, inventory management, and billing and coding reimbursement standards.

CO1 - Demonstrate ethical conduct and adherence to pharmaceutical laws, regulations and professional standards while providing pharmacy services.

CO2 - Compare and contrast the pharmacist and pharmacy technician’s role in collecting, organizing, recording and evaluating demographic and clinical information for direct patient care, medication use review, and departmental management as a member of today’s healthcare team.

CO3 - Explain the steps involved with receiving, screening, and processing prescriptions/medication orders for completeness, accuracy, and authenticity.

CO4 - Describe the procedures involved with inventory management and pharmaceutical purchasing.

CO5 - Demonstrate an understanding of healthcare occupations, medication distribution systems, and information management systems used in the practice of pharmacy.

CO6 - Explain different health insurance programs and how billing and reimbursement standards function within pharmaceutical practice.

CO7 - Describe the application of safe medication practices in the accurate dispensing of medication orders. Course Fee: $64
