PHM-1020 - Advanced Pharmacy Technician Practice* (3)

Prerequisite: PHM-1015  and PHM-1015L   
Co-requisite: PHM-1010  , PHM-1020L   , HEA-1755  , PHM-1440    

The course will provide students with knowledge necessary to understand the process of sterile technique, sterile compounding, infection control, and safe handling of hazardous/non-hazardous medications/products in institutional and community practice.  Students will learn about quality assurance processes and standards that are utilized to ensure the safe preparation, dispensing and use of pharmaceutical products and medical equipment.  Additionally, students will explore major issues, trends, and concepts in contemporary pharmacy practice.

CO1 - Describe the concepts of wellness promotion and disease prevention programs.

CO2 - Explain major trends, issues, goals, and initiatives taking place in the pharmacy profession and how this is creating non-traditional roles for the pharmacy technician.

CO3 - Explain the process of sterile technique and infection control in the preparation of sterile compounds

CO4 - Discuss the process required to assist pharmacist in the identification, preparation, storage, and distribution of medications requiring special handling and documentation.

CO5 - Explain the roles of the pharmacist and the pharmacy technician in ensuring pharmacy department compliance with quality assurance and regulatory practices involving the safe preparation of sterile compounds.

CO6 - Describe the application of safe medication practices in the development of quality assurance programs in preventing medication errors.Course Fee: $96
